Today we are off to the beachfront! Not sure we will be swimming though; the
maximum temperature is going to be about 13 deg C.
We headed off just before 0900. The road was quite winding and steep in
places. Lots of little villages with
building made from the grey stone common to the area.
Stopped for a walk around Machynlleth, it had a great clock
tower in the centre of town.
Jude went
into several antique shops, and a few others and bought some stuff. It was very cold and a little windy. After about half an hour we were on the road
again.
Some more winding road and before we realised we were in Aberystwyth
at the beach. It is a typical British
seaside town with lots of units overlooking the “beach”. The “beach” is all grey sand and rocks and, I
presume, the water was very cold, although I didn’t test it.
We were a bit cheeky and tried to get into our hotel at
about 1215 (check-in is normally 1500) only to be told the room was not
ready. Off for a walk along the
promenade above the beach. Some very
interesting buildings and monuments along the way.
Obviously the storm last Monday was quite bad
here, there are still piles of stones and sand that has washed up over the sea wall
onto the promenade. We had some lunch
and killed some time until we could check into the hotel. We found that we were on the first floor and
even though it advertises that it has a lift it is out of order and evidently
has been for years! Jude had a
discussion with the receptionist, who later came up and offered us a room in
another hotel or apartments in the centre of town…it was tempting, however the
beachfront view over the ocean was too much to give up so we dragged the
luggage upstairs.
