Monday 4 December 2017

Up early, had a shower, finished packing our bags and down to breakfast.

Caught a taxi to the airport and checked in.

Uneventful flight to Perth, caught a taxi home.

Are we glad to be home?  Not really, we would have quite happily stayed away longer!

Sunday 3 December 2017

Slow start again this morning.

Took a taxi to Orchid Road, Jude wanted to do some more shopping!  Wandered around for about 2 hours, then had some lunch, wandered around for about another 2 hours then caught a taxi home.

It is a very tourist part of town, although a lot of locals also seem to shop in Orchid Road.

Had a go at packing the bags, this time I think we have distributed the weight so both our bags are under 30Kg!

Up early tomorrow to catch the plane home!

Went out to get some dinner, but the place we wanted to go was closed.  We wandered along until we found a Korean restaurant.  The staff seemed a bit bemused that we were there!  The food was great.

Saturday 2 December 2017

Slow start this morning.  Left the hotel about 1045 and walked (I wanted to get a free electric scooter each, but Jude wasn’t too keen) along the bank of the river down to Clark Quay.  There are a great many eating and drinking establishments along the way.
We then climbed up the hill at Fort Canning (saw a squirrel and a dead rat along the way) and went to the Battle Box, and underground bunker used during World War Two and is where the Allies signed the surrender to the Japanese.

We then went into Clark Quay on the other side of the river, had some lunch at a little restaurant, then headed back up river to the hotel.  Along the way we saw boat collecting rubbish from the river and quite a few different varieties of fish (including gold fish and carp).
We got back to the hotel about 1430 and had a quiet afternoon.  Once again it was a very hot and humid day.

Friday 1 December 2017

Today we did a trip to Kranji War Cemetery to visit the grave of SGT CB Cameron.  Caught a bus (at about 0900) to the Esplanade MRT Station, managed to purchase a ticket to the Kranji MRT Station.  Go on the train and changed trains at Dhoby Ghaut MRT Station, then on to Kranji MRT Station.  Got off the train and walked the last kilometre to the War Cemetery (it was a very hot day, no clouds and very humid).
We found his name on the wall of honour, then found his headstone.  Jude left a poppy and a note for Julie (his niece) and we took some photos for her.

We then walked back to the station (once again in the heat and humidity) .  Luckily there was a cafĂ© at the station so we sat had lunch and a drink (and rested).

We bought a ticket to Chinatown MRT Station and took a different route back.  Changing trains at Jurong East MRT Station and Outram Park MRT Station before alighting at Chinatown.  We wandered around Chinatown, again, and Jude bought some more stuff, again.  We then sat and had a quiet drink for a while before heading back to the hotel (at about 1600, a long 7 hour day!).

We had a quiet time in the hotel, then went out to dinner at about 1930.

Thursday 30 November 2017

On the bus (at 0900) to the Gardens by the Bay.  Walked through the Flower Dome.  What a fantastic display of all kinds of plants and flowers ranging from succulents, orchids, roses, blackboys to trees.  Well worth a visit!

We then went next door to the Cloud Forest.  Once again, an excellent display of plants up a mountain.  The mist sprays came on while we were there, and light clouds formed in the dome.  Also well worth the visit.

Hopped back on the bus and off to Little India.  Walked through the streets with all the spicy aromas and the garish stores.

We were then going to head back to the hotel but, the bus went through China Town so, we jumped off the bus and had another wander around and as it was getting a little late so, we looked for some dinner.  Found a place that had frogs legs.

Home to the hotel about 1830.  9½ hours wandering around Singapore again!

Wednesday 29 November 2017

Today is bus tour day.  We went to the nearest big red tourist bus stop (a short walk away) at 0930.  Jumped on the first bus that came along (a Brown Bus route).  The bus driver couldn’t sell us a combined boat and bus pass, so he let us ride to the main pickup point where we bought a ticket for the Duck tour (boat on wheels actually a LARC) combined with bus tours.

The boat tour was quite good out onto the Singapore River that has had a barrier put across it to form a reservoir.  The barrier is usually closed but can be opened at low tide to let flood water out.  After cruising along the waterfront we took to the land and drove through the government area of town.

We then had some lunch in a large area filled with other people all crowded in, you just grabbed a seat at a table where there was room.

We then hopped on the Yellow bus that took us to Robinson Quay, the botanic gardens and down the length of Orchard Road.

Next was the Red bus that took us to Little India, Chinatown and several other places of interest.

When we got back to the Hub we wanted to get some milk and a packet of biscuits.  We headed down stairs to where se had seen a supermarket bought our stuff and headed back upstairs, only to find we weren’t were we thought we were and completely lost.  After asking directions a couple of times we managed to find out way back to the buses.  But alas the last Brown bus (the one we were going to take back to the hotel) for the day had departed.  After settling down I realised that the Yellow bus went close to our hotel as well and the last one didn’t leave until 1800.  We stayed put until the bus left.

Back at the hotel at about 1900 (we had been wandering around Singapore for about 9½ hours.

A short break and a cuppa at the hotel and out to dinner at a restaurant across the river.

Tuesday 28 November 2017

Long 12-hour flight, not much sleep.

Got through immigration pretty quickly and grabbed a cab to the hotel.  The room wasn’t ready, we had to wait about three hours, but they did give us access to a quiet room with lounge chairs to wait and fed us a cup of tea.

A quiet afternoon.

Went for a walk about 1730.  Stopped and talked to a man fishing in the river, he said that he had learnt from Australia to catch and release and would go to Australia to go fishing.

We wandered through China Town for a while then had some dinner, Jude did a bit of shopping and we headed back to the hotel about 2030.
