Today was a voyage of discovery. Off to Crosby Ravensworth to look for Dents,
Kings Meaburn Dents again, Colby Ann Atkinson (nee Graham) birth,
Appleby-in-Westmoreland Ann Atkinson (nee Graham) christened, Warcop Richard
Atkinson birth.
Crosby was a bit larger that I thought it would be. We found the church, luckily, they had a map
of the headstones with names so we found it easy to find the Dents. 5 mentioned, 1 killed in the Second World
War, the other 4 were relatives. We took
photos of the headstones and coordinates and tried to read as much as we
could. A great find as we weren’t really
expecting to find much.
We also found a couple
of Atkinsons…don’t know if they are related or not.
We just drove through Kings Meaburn and took a couple of
photos. Robert Dent was born there.
On to Colby were Ann Atkinson (nee Graham) was born, it is very
small village even now. Once again a few
photos, not much to find.
Appleby-in-Westmoreland was a very much bigger place with a Castle
and several churches. This is where Ann Atkinson
(nee Graham) was christened. Popped into
the information centre and asked them about records, they said they were all a Kendal
which is on tomorrows list to visit. Had some lunch in a local café then went to
the church.
Once again not much to get from here, but a great church. Took photos.
Then headed toward Warcop where Richard Atkinson was born. A small village again, but it had a school. We wandered around the church, but not much to
see.
A lot of the driving was on narrow, twisty, hilly little lanes.
We met several cars unexpectedly. But coming around a narrow right angle bend on
a very narrow lane to find, not one, but two tractors coming for us just about made
Jude expire!!! The farmer laughed at her!
