Kendal, John Atkinson born and to visit the Archives (by
0930). Then if time drive up to Grasmere
were James (John) Atkinson married Esther Hartley.
Short drive down to Burton, the traffic on the small road
was pretty heavy, lots of big trucks. It is a small town and quite old by the
look of it. Jude got some postcards for
the John and the Hall boys as John’ dad was born in Burton. It was mayhem in the middle of the village
with all the traffic and big trucks!!
Another short drive to Heversham where John Atkinson married
Ann Graham. Once again very heavy
traffic on the small road. In Heversham
there was only one church so we stopped and went in. There were 4 people in the church. The only man was very helpful and looked for
the marriage register for us, but couldn’t find it in the vestry. He said it may have been sent to Kendal Archives.
We did get a photo of the Vicar who would
have married them.
Back on the road again, made the mistake of going onto the motorway.
It was a parking lot. Evidently there had been 3 accidents in a short
time. It took us 1½ hours to do 8 miles!!
Finally got to Kendal. Skipped lunch and straight to the Archives, got
checked in and started looking for records. WE found a couple of Atkinson records and quite
a few Dent records. Not a bad 4 hours work!
We are now convinced that Ann Graham was born in Colby, christened
in Appleby-in-Westmoreland and married in Heversham before emigrating to Australia.
Had a pub meal in Kendal. Don had Cumbria Sausages and Jude had steak and
kidney pie at 1700 then back to the hotel.
