Left Sheffield about 0830 and headed towards York. The road on the way up (A19) was one of the
best roads we have driven on…most have been pretty dreadful!! Stopped and had morning tea at a park in a
little village along the way.
We decided we would drive straight to our accommodation,
leave the car there and go into central York (we couldn’t check in until
1500. We spoke to the manager and that
was OK. She also told us that we could
catch a No 2 bus into town and back very nearby. So off on the bus we went.
Perchance it dropped us just outside the tourist information
centre, so we popped in. Go the hard
sell from a bloke there who tried to sell us a pass for £50 each. We said we would go and sit down and go
through what we wanted to do. When we
did that we figured it would cost less than that to do what we wanted for the 2
of us!
It was close to lunch so we grabbed a sandwich and takeaway
tea, hopped on the Big Red bus and did a lap to get our bearings, it was really
quite good. We then decided we would go
on the walking tour. That took about 2½
hours and that was well worthwhile.
It was then time to head home and check out our
accommodation in the Old Grey Mare.
Caught the No 2 bus with just about everyone else in York (and I think
we jumped the queue!).
It turns out our room is at the top of 2 flights of
stairs. The first has 15 steep and
narrow steps, the second 10 very steep and very narrow steps. Hauled the suit cases up and go sorted
out. Went downstairs and had Indian for
dinner.
Back upstairs, can’t get the wifi to work fiddled went down
and asked a few questions. No luck! Really wanted to book our next accommodation,
but I guess that will have to wait!
Back upstairs for an early night!
We have decided that tomorrow we will hop on the Big Red bus
(the ticket is good for 24 hours) in the morning and go to the National Railway
Museum. Do a river cruise and then visit
the Treasures House.
We walked about 8 Km today.
