Well we more or less stuck to our plan today. Except we decided the boat trip on the river
wasn’t worth it as it only when about a kilometre down the river.
On the bus into town, then onto the Red Bus (our ticket was
still good from yesterday). First stop
the National Railway Museum. A great
place. In the Station Hall they had
various different trains in a station setting.
There were several Royal Trains that were very plush with crowns and
coats of arms on the engine. In the
Great Hall there are mostly engines from George Stephenson’s Rocket to a Bullet
train from Japan and almost everything in between. They also have a warehouse where they store
all sorts of railway memorabilia and a repair/restoration workshop to work on
rolling stock of all sorts.
We went into the Library so we could get wifi (wifi at the
hotel is pretty awful) and book our next accommodation in Newcastle Upon Tyne
and have lunch.
We then wandered through the little streets of the old city
centre, including one called the Shambles where there used to be lots of
butchers shops. Now it is a tourist
street.
We then walked to the Treasurer’s House. A house or series of houses that had been
restored by Frank Green. Some say he
restored them others say he butchered them!
He created an opulent residence in which to entertain and impress people
and lavishly furnished it. He did have
royalty stay, Edward before he was King.
At the Treasurer’s House there was a clock that had a very
long pendulum. The clock was on the
first floor, a hole had been cut in the floor so the pendulum could hand down
to the into the ground floor space.
Having finished there we walked around to the Minster
(Cathedral) to check out when it opened and what we could do.
We were rather amazed to see dogs riding on buses. We asked one owner if it was legal, yes he
said dogs were allowed on busses, boats and trains!
The plan for tomorrow is to be at the Minster at
0900.
