Up early today and headed out to Grandtilly (said Grandilly)
to try to find John Stewart’s grave.
After talking to a few locals (who kept saying why would they take him
such a long way to bury him) we ended up at St Marys Church just outside
Grandtilly. A quaint little church with
a few graves around it, but no John Stewart.
Went into Dunkeld to the archives that happened to be open from 1000 to
1200. An old gentleman there was very
helpful and gave us some information on John Stewart from Little Tombane
Farm. We couldn’t find anything that
indicated that John had a son Robert. In
fact it appears that John spent his whole life in the area. That then leaves the question – Why would
Robert (who emigrated to Australia) have been born in County Down, Ireland as
he states on most of his children’s birth records (and signs) if he was the son
of this John Stewart?
A lot more questions than answers.
While driving we saw lots of pheasants again, someone later
told us that a lot of the farmers would have reared young pheasants for release
ready for the hunting season. Jude saw a
dead pheasant on the road so I had to stop so she could pluck a feather.
Jude then bought us a pie for lunch, but omitted to ask for it
to be heated. So when we got round to eat
they were stone motherless cold!!
We then went into Perth and had a little drive around, the River
Tay runs through the middle. Our impression
was that it was a drab and dreary place and the people didn’t look very happy. Stopped for Jude to go into a gallery where there
were some great sculptures.
Mid afternoon we headed back to the Hotel. We are both a bit worn out!!
