Up about 0700 then shower down to breakfast. The owner hovered the whole time we were
having breakfast!!
Packed the car and drove to the American War Cemetery in
Cambridge, the land was gifted to the US by Cambridge University. The traffic was bumper to bumper and I missed
the turn and had to do a u turn across it…exciting.
Then on to Peterborough to have a look at the Flag Fen
archaeological site were they have excavated a 3 ½ thousand year old causeway
made of wood, tree boats, remains of huts and other artefacts. Really interesting. Had lunch there. There is a huge area of very low lying ground
(not very far above sea level) that has been drained over the years.
The had a go at getting to the Peterborough Cathedral. The closest we got was the service entrance
(that was shut) after about 2 laps around it without finding a park we gave up
and headed for Leicester. The country
along the way is much more rolling hills and open farmland.
Decided we would go straight to our hotel. The traffic was really bad, I missed a turn and
the traffic got worse. Then we discovered
that the hotel was at a truck stop on the M1 and we had pulled up on the wrong side.
We walked across the bridge and tried to
book in…they hadn’t heard of us! It turns
out that when I booked on line it had turn the dates into American format so we
were booked in on the 8/10 not. They were
very good and sorted it all out and we got a room. We then had some interesting driving to get the
car to the other side of the M1!!
The truck stop is a small town. It has: 2 supermarkets, about a dozen fast food
shops, several coffee shops, a motel and 2 service stations. Much of it suspended over the M1 on a large bridge.
Planned tomorrows driving, we are going to visit Lutterworth, Leire,
Hinckley, Stock Golding, Sutton Cheney, Cadeby Market Bosworth and Newbold Verdon.
They are all places that 112 of Jude’s ancestors
and 1 of mine come from!
